Ms Ashpole says she won’t be getting her Fourth Street house fixed or moving back in until something is done to alleviate the flooding in Swamp Creek.

Ms Ashpole and her daughters Lilly (12), Stevie-Lee (nine) and Shae (two) are currently living with her sister in Singleton, having rented a couple of other properties in the months since the April 2015 super storm.

Vandals rubbed salt into the wounds when they set fire to the back shed.

“I used to take high pride in my house, but not any more,” Ms Ashpole said.

“It’s really heartbreaking, it looks like a drongo house now.

“I used to love it; but it’s just a house now, I wouldn’t call it a home.

“My poor neighbours have to look at it, but I’ve got no intentions of fixing it.

“There’s no point going through all of that time and effort, if it’s going to flood again.

“I don’t want to put my kids through that again.”

Ms Ashpole said she had high hopes that the creek would be cleared after the June 2007 storm, but those hopes faded by 2015.

“I’ve heard it all before,” she said.

“How many years do we have to complain about that creek?”

Swanson Street residents Ron and Marilyn Wright share Ms Ashpole’s concerns about Swamp Creek.

The ground floor of the Wrights’ home was inundated in the April 2015 flood.

“It (the creek) has just been abandoned,” Ms Wright said.

“They really need to do something, or it’s going to happen again.”

Ms Wright said the creek is not just a flood risk now – a grass fire broke out there over the summer.

Cessnock City Council will receive $100,000 from the Office of Environment and Heritage for the environmental investigations and design stage of the Swamp Creek flood mitigation works.

These works are a priority project of its floodplain risk management plan that was adopted in December 2013.

The council has also applied to the OEH to support funding voluntary house raising in the Abermain and Weston sections of Swamp Creek.
