The campaign is a collaboration between Cessnock City Council and 14 local schools.
In accordance with council’s Road Safety Strategic Plan 2014-18, access to road safety information will keep school communities informed on speeding, parking, crossings and general road safety.
Council’s road safety officer Warren Jeffery said police and council rangers are often confronted with drivers that are not aware they are committing an offence.
“Unfortunately breaches of the road rules are strict liability offences and ignorance of the law is no excuse,” Mr Jeffery said.
Council has gained support from schools to ensure the prominent display of school zone signage, supplying 14 schools with aluminium-backed, graffiti-proofed, coloured signs at each school’s main pedestrian entrance.
“This campaign is so positive with schools and council working together to ensure the roads around our schools are safer for students,” Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said.
“With the support from local schools and residents we can achieve road safety around schools by observing the road rules.”
Speeding, parking and other road offences in school zones carry heavier fines and loss of demerit points.
