Code Club Australia is a free, volunteer-led nationwide network that believes it is not just enough for children to know how to use technology, learning to code is now an important skill for living in a digital age.

Code Club projects teach children how to program by showing them how to make computer games, animations and websites.

Library services coordinator Rose-marie Walters said children should understand they are in charge of the computer, and can (and should) make it do what they want – not the other way around.

“Learning to code does not just mean kids can become developers; it strengthens their problem solving skills and logical thinking, and supports key academic subjects such as science, maths and technology,” Ms Walters said.

“Code Club is about fun, creativity, and learning through exploring.”

Cessnock Library will be running two Code Clubs during term two: Tuesdays 4pm to 5pm for children aged eight to 12, and Thursdays 4pm to 5pm for children aged 13 and over.
