WATCH the Hunter's biggest Anzac Day dawn service as it happened.
Newcastle RSL sub-branch president Ken Fayle estimates 50,000 people attended the service at Camp Shortland, remembering the Anzacs as the sun rose over the beach.
Among the first awaiting the service were Rebecca Longfield and Flynn, her 18-month-old son.
Ms Longfield stood on the fence a short distance from Wallsend’s Lane family, who staked out a place to pay their respects from about 3.30am.
Knights coach Nathan Brown, whose side will take on Manly later today, laid a wreath on behalf of the club.
HMAS Newcastle commander Mark Sirois attended, with the ship berthed in Sydney.
40 crew members joined him in the Hunter in 2016 but Commander Sirois said he planned to bring the ship to its home port in a year’s time.
