Cessnock coach Dan Smailes is disappointed with the loss, but confident his side is on the right track after Sunday's 22-14 defeat by Central Newcastle.

Smailes said a failure to convert two goals and put more scoreboard pressure had left the door open for the Butcher Boys to win.
“Leading 14-10 we were probably in control, but we gave Centrals a sniff. If that had been 18-10 it would probably have been too big a psychological break for them to get home,” he said.
“I’m pretty happy with how we are playing, the fundamentals are there for a good season.”
Centrals scored twice in the final 15 minutes to overcome Cessnock 22-14 and clinch their maiden win of the season.
Central halfback Jordan Worboys and Cessnock prop Kori Barber both produced doubles. Fullback Brent Mendyk got the Goannas other try.
Cal Orchard is the Goannas main injury concern.
Reserve grade had a very impressive 28 to 4 win.
Fabian Dunstan, Simione Maamaloa, Nick Pringle, Sam Wilson and Archie Dunstan scored tries, with Dean Wearing kicking four goals.
Players’ player went to Zeb Dunstan.
Open age were beaten 32 to 18.
Ben Rose crossed twice and Alex Dave also scored a try. Fyan Levin kicking three goals. Players’ player went to Ben Rose.
The under 19s had an 18-all draw, with tries to Jye Ireland, Riley Taylor and Connor Kirkwood.
Hayden Yates kicked two goals and Jye Ireland landed one. Players’ player went to Nick Lawrence.
