The veterans and their wives – some from as far away as Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland –reunite in a different town every year on Anzac Day.
They chose Kurri this year as the service included the unveiling of a Vietnam War memorial.
The memorial includes the names of 19 Newcastle and Hunter servicemen who were killed in action in South Vietnam.
One of the men on the memorial is Private Richard Lloyd, of Weston, a member of the 5RAR who died when a mine exploded as he built a fence in the village of Dat Do, Phuoc Tuy, on April 6, 1967.
“It’s a day to remember each other and those who are no longer with us,” a member of the group and former workmate of Pte Lloyd, Neil ‘Rory’ Colquhoun said.
