The Heart Foundation event shines a spotlight on Australia’s heart health.
Heart Foundation’s National CEO and practicing cardiologist, Professor Garry Jennings said around 55,000 Australians had a heart attack every year.
He said not enough people were taking the right steps to prevent another heart attack.
“During Heart Week we’re talking about how cardiac rehabilitation programs help people get back on their feet and return to living an active and satisfying life after their heart event – both physically and emotionally,” Professor Jennings said.
“Regular physical activity such as walking is a perfect way to help reduce your risk and help people recover after a heart attack and our Heart Foundation Walking program can help you do that in a friendly and social environment.
“Many of our walking groups support people who have had a heart attack.
“Results from the 2015 Heart Foundation Walking evaluation, revealed that fewer than one in twelve walkers reported they have had either a heart attack or a stroke.
“Of those walkers who have had a stroke or heart attack, more than two in five reported that having this event prompted them to join a walking group.”
Coalfields Healthy Heartbeat coordinator Shane Feeney encourages people from Cessnock and the surrounding areas to join the walk on Thursday.
“They will help to raise awareness of the importance of our heart health and we’re hoping it might even encourage people to start walking with us regularly," he said.
The three-kilometre walk will assemble at Peace Park (Chinaman’s Hollow) at 9.45am for a 10am start.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a thermos with hot water for a cup of tea.
All walkers are encouraged to dress in red or wear a Heart Foundation Walking shirt if they have one.
A free healthy morning tea will be provided. RSVP to Shane on 4993 3410 or chhb@samaritans.org.au for catering purposes.
