Congratulations to the deserving recipients of the 2016 Mayoral Academic Scholarships: Kasey Williams, Jessica Connelly, Daniel Snedden, Louise Prater, Georgia Eddy, Ben McDonald, Ashley-Kate Howlett, Madeline Benson, Abbey Larsen, Sarah Donn, Matthew Hughes and Damien Alley.
Each student received $2500 to assist in reaching their potential and to make meeting the cost of education a little easier. Previous winners have gone on to achieve amazing things in their respective fields and it is great to be able to offer a helping hand to cover expenses such as textbooks or travel.
Thank you to this year’s sponsors Austar Coal, CDLC Support Inc., Cessnock Retired Mineworkers Association, Cessnock Leagues Club, Donaldson Coal, Hunter Resource Recovery, Kurri Retired Mineworkers Association, Kurri Rotary, Cessnock Rotary and Solo Resource Recovery. These valued sponsors continued support is essential for the success of the Mayoral Academic Scholarships. Since 2002 we have awarded 190 students a total of $475,000 for the betterment of our local students’ futures.
Thank you to the students who applied for the 2016 scholarships and I encourage all of our applicants to reapply next year.
MICROCHIPPING DAY
Last Saturday council’s administration building car park on Cumberland Street was transformed into a microchipping hub.
Residents from across the Cessnock local government area came to receive a free microchip for their registered pets. It is a great service for the community where council rangers hope to make the cost of being a responsible pet owner easier for families.
Microchipping your dog or cat is one of the most important things you can do for your pet and rangers aim to see every dog and cat in the local government area identifiable. Thank you to Hunter Animal Watch who also offered reduced rates for pensioners/health care card holders who wished to have their animals desexed.
VALE COL BROWN
It was with great sadness Kathy and I attended the funeral of Col Brown on May 9.
Col always put his community first, being a member of the Kurri Kurri Rotary Club for nearly 42 years.
His unselfishness and personal commitment to helping people was certainly an inspiration to our community and he will be sadly missed.
