Senior climatologist with the Bureau of Meteorology Agata Imielska said the Lower Hunter will not be experiencing much of an Autumn with wet and warm conditions forecast for the next seven weeks.
“It hasn’t been much of an autumn and winter is only just around the corner,” Ms Imielska said.
“April was the second warmest April on record, March was also hot and May will continue to be warm,” she said.
“The outlook for May through to July is warm with a high chance of wetter rather than dry conditions.
“Both nights and days will be warm during that period.”
Ms Imielska said our recent windy conditions may continue which is not unusual for this time of year.
“It’s quite common to experience the windy conditions in autumn and in spring however we do normally get some cooler changes coming through this time of year but that doesn’t appear to be happening this year,” she said.
Ms Imielska said a high pressure system over the state is generating the warmer days.
“In fact the high temperatures are happening right across Australia at the moment with records being broken in some parts,” she said.
“We are bound to get some cooler weather at some point and it will certainly be a shock to Hunter people when the wintery change sets in after it being warm for so long.”
The conditions are good news for farmers who are relying on crops to provide for stock during the winter months.
Hunter Local Land Services pastures officer Tony Blatch said the conditions sound ideal and will mean more growth than usual for local pastures, holding farmers in good stead throughout the colder months
“The forecast sounds perfect,” he said.
