The bridge reopened to traffic on Monday, four days earlier than scheduled.
Two council crews worked for 24 hours a day to undertake the works required due to extensive deterioration to the corbels, girders and deck planks on the bridge, which is located north-west of Wollombi Road.
Cessnock City Council’s director of works and infrastructure Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr said the works have resulted in the six-tonne load limit being removed, restoring access for residents and heavy vehicles.
“Our staff banded together and really went above and beyond to ensure this work was carried out in the shortest timeframe possible and with minimal impact on residents and surrounding properties,” Mr Fitzpatrick-Barr said.
“A pedestrian walk bridge was maintained to enable access across the bridge throughout the works, and a shuttle bus was made available to transport residents to and from their properties.”
Issues of transport and water requirements were discussed with residents ahead of the project commencement.
