Announcing her decision, Cr Rogers said that she was motivated by a strong sense of duty to the people of the Hunter Valley.
“My husband and I have lived in the Hunter for thirty years now.
“We’ve raised a family here and built a business and I’ve always believed in giving back to the community.”
Ruth Rogers was first elected to Singleton Council in a by-election in 2009. In her seven years on Council she has been a strong advocate for members of the armed forces, veterans and their families.
She has also been a spokesperson for Cystic Fibrosis awareness and has championed a number of local causes including the Drayton South expansion and the removal of flying foxes from Singleton’s Burdekin Park.
Cr Rogers said that her local priorities were advocating for better mental health services in the region, the long-term sustainability of the mining industry and ensuring a fair farm-gate return for dairy farmers.
“There’s a lot to be done in our electorate, and a number of issues that need attention.
“I’m happy to stand on my record as someone who works for their community and gets things done.”
Cr Rogers said that voters in Hunter deserved a choice at the coming federal election.
“There are lot of people out there like me who are fed up with politics as usual.
“As a local mother, whose children are raising their own families in the Hunter, I have a strong interest in our region’s future.
“I know that taking on a twenty-year incumbent MP will be challenging, but our votes should never be taken for granted.”
