Some of these hits are still played on the radio today; others you may not have heard for a while.
Get ready to fall in love with these classic tracks all over again, when John Paul Young and the Allstar Band brings the Vanda and Young Songbook concert to Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 13.
The man known as JPY was at the heart of this dynamic duo’s hit-making era, with songs such as Pasadena, I Hate The Music and Yesterday's Hero.
And who could forget Love Is In The Air – released in Australia in 1977, it went on to make the UK and US top 10 the following year, and was revived in 1992 as the theme song for Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.
Young – an ARIA Hall of Fame inductee in 2009 – says he was privileged to have recorded with Vanda and Young, who he described as a “powerhouse” in Australian songwriting.
Vanda and Young were original members of the Easybeats and wrote timeless hits such as Friday on My Mind and the Evie trilogy.
JPY says it’s an honour to be bringing these hits – including those made famous by his friends Stevie Wright and Ted Mulry – to audiences around the country on the Songbook tour.
“It’s two hours of hits, they just keep coming at you,” he said.
It’s also a “slide night” of sorts, with old photos on screen and Young sharing own behind-the-scenes stories about the songs and their making.
The Allstar Band features two of the original members in Warren "The Pig" Morgan (who cut his teeth in the original Aztecs) and Ronnie "Rockwell T James" Peel, of The Missing Links and La De Das fame.
They have been joined by Greg Plimmer, Juan Gonzalez and Michael "China" Walker in the early ‘80s, with Paul Kirtley (percussionist) a recent addition to the troupe.
The show will start at 8pm. Visit www.cessnockperformingartscentre.com.au or call 4990 7134 for tickets.
