Charity support group Strive for Autism is hosting the event, which aims to assist local educators, medical practitioners, parents and family members of autism.

The speakers, Jeanette Purkis, Rachael Harris and Dr Lee Sturgeon will share their wealth of knowledge and experience accumulated over many years.

Jeanette Purkis is an adult with Asperger's syndrome and atypical schizophrenia, who has contributed to improving the lives of people with disabilities and their families.

She is an author, a renowned speaker, radio host, support group facilitator and an ambassador for a number of autism organisations.

Rachael Harris is a registered psychotherapist and author specialising in Asperger's syndrome.

Ms Harris has provided a unique perspective into autism therapy and research as she was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome.

Dr Lee Sturgeon is a senior clinical and developmental psychologist practicing in Newcastle with a focus on autism spectrum disorder and developmental disorders in children and adolescents.

Dr Sturgeon lectures widely across Australia specialising in practical behavioural interventions.

Strive for Autism was founded in Cessnock in 2007 by a small group of parents with children newly diagnosed with Autism.

Over the past nine years, Strive president Maxine Baird said the organisation has supported families living with autism and has increased awareness in the local community.

“We are excited about this night, the last seminar we had over 400 people attend, we look forward to imparting further education to our community,” Ms Baird said.
