The racing in Wine Country over the past couple of years has been great and the recent boost in prizemoney for country tracks has attracted more Sydney and provincial trainers to the Cessnock meetings.
The recent formation of the Wine Country Race Club advisory committee which comprises prominent Cessnock identities is a step in the right direction.
The upgrading of facilities at the Cessnock Racecourse is continuing.
The Wine Country Race Club are in discussions with the local arm of Soldier On, an organisation set up to support returned service men and women, in an endeavour to have them assist in the design and construction of an ANZAC Memorial to “Horses In War” to be launched at Cessnock ANZAC Day meeting in 2017.
The plan includes significant upgrades to gardens and general facilities occurring over the coming months.
The presentation to the 2015-2016 premiership winners will be part of a huge evening at Merewether Surfhouse on Wednesday, September 14.
The Newcastle Jockey Club will host the night which features the Beaumont track premiership winners and the launch of Newcastle’s Spring Racing Carnival.
The Cessnock premiership winners were Robert Thompson (jockey), Brett Partelle (trainer) and Samantha Clenton (apprentice).
Cessnock trainers are having a terrific run of success in recent weeks. Jeremy Sylvester is leading the way and last Saturday week he notched up his third Metropolitan Highway Handicap success when his four-year-old Snappy One led all the way to claim the $34,500 first prize.
The previous week Sylvester’s Lasszou won the Canterbury Highway Handicap and the former baker’s smart galloper Three Sheets has also won a “Highway”.
Robert “Pud” Davies won four on the trot recently with Zadok the Priest and Dean Jacksons Street Savvy won well at Muswellbrook last week.
Lovedale trainer Amanda Langlar has a smart mare called Bob’s Ticket, which finished second on debut at Newcastle on July 23 and then had strong Newcastle win two weeks later.
Bob’s Ticket is raced by former Maitland Rugby League premiership winner Bob McLaughlin and his wife Valda.
