The girl, 11, has told police she was able to escape the car after being assaulted on George Booth Drive at Richmond Vale about noon on Monday.
Child Abuse Squad Newcastle detectives have released descriptions of the girl and her attacker in a bid to find any possible eyewitnesses to the kidnapping.
The girl, who was wearing a yellow and blue fairytale costume, was standing next to George Booth Drive at West Wallsend about noon on Monday.
The motorist stopped his car, a dark red- or maroon-coloured four-wheel drive with silver rims, and asked if the girl wanted a lift.
She got into the car before being driven to Richmond Vale, where he stopped off George Booth Drive and indecently assaulted her.
The girl was able to escape the car and raise the alarm.
They are now hunting for a man described as being Caucasian, of slim build, with short blond hair, a trimmed beard and a small moustache.
She believed he was aged in his early 40s and was wearing jeans, a red jacket and reading glasses.
Police are searching for anyone who saw the girl or the car at West Wallsend, driving along George Booth Drive, or parked off the road at Richmond Vale.
Information should be forwarded to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
