The pomp and ceremony is something to behold as the Usher of the Black Rod summons Members of the House of Representatives to the Senate for the official opening of the new Parliament.

Led by the Serjeant-at- Arms, carrying the Mace, we were a procession of experienced and not-so- experienced elected representatives, all feeling the excitement and the responsibility of the positions we hold.

Traditions like these may seem out of place in the modern-day rough and tumble of politics, but they are a good reminder of the long history that lies at the foundation of our stable democracy. 

I’m also pleased to report that the number of women in Parliament has increased to 73, or 32%, and that Labor has 42 female MPs. It’s important that diverse voices are heard in Parliament, and the increase in women MPs goes part way to achieving that.

Last week, I met with a group of disability service providers who are experiencing ongoing difficulties with the new NDIS computer portal.

We had a phone hook-up with Shadow Minister for Disability Reform Jenny Macklin, who has been vocal in her criticisms of the computer glitches and demands that the Government fix the problems.

My office has also been contacted by the families of people with a disability who have had trouble accessing the services they need. If you are having problems, we may be able to help.

The NDIS is such an important initiative that we have to get it right.

A number of people have contacted my office with questions about changes to their pensions.

Centrelink offers a free and confidential Financial Information Service, but you do need to make an appointment well in advance.

The service offers information, not advice, and you still make your own decisions. Information is available on the age pension, retirement planning, domestic violence, managing your money, being retrenched and so on. You can seek information or request an appointment by phoning 132 300, and saying “Financial Information Service” when prompted.
