Why? Because on the morning of September 15 Tahlia’s prompt actions saved her mother’s life.
Bec, who has epilepsy, had recently changed her medication and on that fateful morning she suffered a major seizure while she was in the locked bathroom of the family’s home in Singleton Heights.
Tahlia would normally have been on the bus heading to school at St Catherine’s Catholic College but she was home that day with a sore foot and she was in her bedroom when she heard a thud.
“I rushed to the bathroom and started yelling out for Mum and she didn’t answer,”Tahlia.
“I found my phone and rang Dad and said I couldn’t get to Mum in the bathroom and he said get a butter knife from the kitchen and try to unlock the door.”
In the meantime Adam drove quickly from downtown and once home he tried to get into the bathroom but couldn’t so he rushed to the garden shed got a crowbar and used that to open the door.
Bec had fallen against the door which made opening it more difficult. Once inside the bathroom Adam quickly realised how serious the situation was and immediately started CPR on Bec as Tahlia rang the ambulance.
Adam has a first aid certificate but admitted he found it daunting to actually use those skills in a life saving situation.
Within minutes the ambulance arrived and Bec was taken to Singleton Hospital before being transferred to John Hunter Hospital where she was placed on life support overnight.
Now back home and feeling almost fully recovered Bec said she has absolutely no recollection of the events that morning.
“I remember nothing but I am only alive today thanks Tahlia – she is my angel,” says Bec.
“Our family wants to thank everyone who helped us that day especially the emergency services and the staff at Singleton Hospital. Having my daughter home that morning and what she did saved my life.”
