The event, which falls on September 29 each year, gives police forces within Australasia the opportunity to pay tribute to officers who have sacrificed their lives in the course of their duties.
The day also provides a time to remember those who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances.
Since the inception of the NSW Police Force in 1862, 254 members have died in the line duty.
And, in the past 12 months, Sergeant Geoffrey Graham Richardson (March 5) and Curtis Shu Kei Cheng (October 2, 2015) were killed.
Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen, dignitaries from Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter shire councils, as well as representatives from NSW Fire & Rescue, NSW SES, NSW RFS, NSW Ambulance, Returned and Services League (RSL) Sub-Branches and community members attended the function.
Hunter Valley LAC Acting Superintendent Guy Guiana admitted it was a “day of significance” for the NSW Police Force.
“Lives can be shattered in a matter of minutes,” he said.
“But, our fallen colleagues will remain in our memory.”
