Assuming you're spending a few days in Las Vegas you could fly in from San Diego since there's no need for a car in Las Vegas. Campervan or motels are two very different holidays. If you've done a campervan trip before and it all worked well then that's a great option but if this is a first time I'd go for motels.
Recreational Vehicle parks, as they are in the US, are popular, especially in places like the Grand Canyon, and you'd be wise to book ahead even in June. Go Camping America (www.gocampingamerica.com ) is a one-stop website to help plan your trip. If you intend to stay in motels, booking ahead is less crucial.
Roads are good throughout the areas you'll be visiting. You need to return your vehicle to Las Vegas to avoid a one-way fee, and you could fly from there to Los Angeles, assuming that's where you're flying home from.
