About 10,000 people are expected to attend.

Committee secretary Charlie McLennan said the event is building in momentum and popularity, with teams coming in from all over the country.

Up to 60 teams – including two-time champions Marty McNamara and Luke Richards – will compete for the Damien Wallace Perpetual Trophy.

The trophy has been named in honour of Damien Wallace, a dedicated Australian Postie Bike Grand Prix committee member who passed away in June.

The race through the TAFE grounds and surrounding streets is organised by Cessnock Motorcycle Club and community volunteers.

Heats will be held from 9am Sunday morning into the early afternoon, followed by the two-hour grand prix from 3pm.

The day will also feature amusements, markets, entertainment and will conclude with a presentation at Peden’s Hotel that evening.

On the Saturday prior to race day, there will be scrutineering of the bikes in Peden’s courtyard from midday, followed by a meet and greet in the evening.

Ms McLennan said the public are encouraged to come down and get their photo taken with all the teams and the grid girls.

This year’s event will include a bridge from the market area in the TAFE grounds to the new pit area.

The bridge has been built and donated by Sams Mining Services. 

“Residents of affected areas will be able to have easier, safer access to the grounds this way,” Ms McLennan said.

The VIP area will now be included in the market area in the TAFE park, where Funky Junk Flea Markets will have the majority of markets and food stalls.

The VIP area is under an impressive marquee to protect punters from the elements. VIP tickets (which include a drink and canape package and private toilet facilities) are available from Peden's Hotel.

The event supports various local organisations including the Cessnock District Rescue Squad, Rural Fire Service and Cessnock RSL Pipes and Drums Band.
