I have written to our local councils asking them to consider making a contribution.
I'd also like local residents to do the same.
It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or technical – just provide a few sentences about how the local bat colonies have affected you in your daily life.
It's important that Members of the Committee hear from real people experiencing real problems.
You can email your submission directly to the Committee at aph.gov.au/flyingfoxes by COB Friday, November 18.
The Committee will focus on the impacts on local communities and the State and Federal laws which make the issue so challenging.
Let's hope we can find some solutions which both help communities but respect the role the bats play in our ecology.
LONE PINE
Last Friday was Remembrance Day. It's now 101 years since our troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula and 98 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front.
Last Friday we paused to remember all those who have served, particularly those who paid the ultimate price. It's for all of us to ensure we never fodder their deeds, courage and sacrifice.
This year I did something a little different. Rusher than attend one of the many Services organised by our local RSL Sub Branches, I participated in a solemn Service at Cessnock's Calvary nursing home.
There I planted a Lone Pine in honour of Bert Ferres, recently passed resident who was also a Rat of Tobruk. It was a great honour.
I purchased the Lone Pine plant from the Australian War Memorial and donated it in the name of my recently deceased father-in-law Allan McKay who was also a Calvary resident.
As I addressed the gathering, I was conscious of the fact that most of the elderly residents gathered, would hold a greater appreciation of the carnage and sacrifice of war than me.
Thank you to Calvary, to our RSL Sub Branches and tp all those who ensured we paused last Friday to respect, honour and say thank you to all those who have served in the uniform of the Australian Defence Forces.
