Students from Cessnock High School, Kitchener, Kurri Kurri and Nulkaba primary schools were among the 5500 performers who took part in the world record-setting production at Qudos Bank Arena at Sydney Olympic Park on November 25 and 26.
The show’s biggest year in its 33-year history, the 2016 Schools Spectacular broke the Guinness World Record title for Largest Amateur Variety Act.
Guinness World Records adjudicator, Solvej Malouf was on hand to verify the title and said it was a pleasure to award the title to such a talented group of students.
“There was a great energy in the room throughout the entire event and everyone was so excited when the certificate was awarded,” Ms Malouf said.
“Congratulations to the Department of Education and all involved in the Schools Spectacular.”
The three-hour special will go to air at 7pm this Saturday night (December 3) on Channel 7 in Sydney and Prime7 in regional areas.
Schools Spectacular executive producer Jane Simmons has no doubt the huge anticipated audience will be amazed.
“While our student performers are absolutely incredible, the staging of the Schools Spectacular by some of our best entertainment professionals makes it unbelievably amazing,” Ms Simmons said.
“We welcomed a new chapter in the 33-year history of the Schools Spectacular with the biggest-ever show in a brand new venue.
“The energy and excitement took performances to a new level and that should jump out through the screens.”
Creative Director Sonja Sjolander said it will be a chance for the more than 5000 performers and thousands more who contributed behind the scenes to relive the exhilaration of the show and congratulate themselves on a wonderful performance.
“Everyone comes together to make Schools Spectacular the well-loved and highly acclaimed show it is live as well as on television screens,” Ms Sjolander said.
“Every single featured artist, dancer, musician, singer and member of the stage crew is a star.
“Watching the show gives us all a chance to pay tribute to these stars while enjoying a hugely entertaining show featuring something for everybody.”
More than a million viewers are anticipated to watch Saturday night’s screening.
