Almost a third of those in attendance donned costumes for the Great Cessnock Christmas Elf Challenge, and while they didn’t break the world record, they had plenty of fun – taking part in a singalong led by Emmie Hallett.
“It’s about Christmas spirit, and if that many people are prepared to dress up as elves then they’ve shown that,” Project Cessnock coordinator Adrian Buckley said.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said it was fantastic to see the community enjoying the Carols.
“The talent was marvellous, as was the fireworks display but the real highlight was watching the faces on local children light up as Santa touched down in a helicopter,” Cr Pynsent said.
“This is what events are all about, bringing the community together allowing families to spend quality time together.
“Council’s decision to restructure the running of events saw Cessnock Performing Arts Centre take on the role which was a clear success.
“I’d also like to thank Project Cessnock for their work in putting together the Elf Challenge, while we didn’t break the record we sure did have a great time.”
Cr Pynsent said it was a good turnout considering the unpredictable weather – a high of 38 degrees followed by a light shower.
