Five people had to be evacuated from an East Cessnock home on Thursday night after a tree branch fell through the home’s roof.

The Cessnock City State Emergency Service (SES) Unit attended the callout in Coulson Avenue at about 8.30pm Thursday.
A branch from a Moreton Bay fig tree had detached and fallen through the roof, ripping off guttering and tiles and damaging the front verandah.
Cessnock City SES deputy controller Alison Dee said the residents were evacuated due to safety concerns.
“One of them was asleep in the front room,” she said.
“They’re actually very lucky.”
The Department of Housing was arranging temporary accommodation for the residents.
SES volunteers secured the tree with construction props and returned to the scene on Friday morning to assist while arborists removed the tree.
The SES attended another callout in Stephen Street, West Cessnock that night, where a number of tiles had blown off a roof.
