Revitalising Newcastle program director Michael Cassel said the December 9 event had been created with the community in mind.
“Whether it’s families, local residents or workers finishing up for the week, we’ve got food attractions, a licensed area and lots of free entertainment for kids and adults alike,” Mr Cassel said.
He said the opening marked an important moment in the city’s transformation.
“We have worked really hard this year to get this space ready to open up for the community – we see it as one of the best ways to demonstrate how the former heavy rail corridor can be a fantastic space for public use,” Mr Cassel said.
“It’s great to be opening Market Street Lawn before Christmas and the festivities we have planned are sure to be enjoyed by everyone, with a special focus on a free kids’ area including a jumping castle, face painting and a visit from Santa.”
He said the Market Street Lawn festivities would start at 4.30pm on Friday and run until 9:30pm.
Newcastle City Council was opening its mall parking station at 92 King Street free of charge from 4pm to 10.30pm.
Entertainment included Morgana Osaki, Grace Turner, Earthen Rhythms Drum & Dance and Crazy Old Maurice’s Bike Powered Mobile Disco.
“We’ve got lots of food options too, with Bao Brothers, Poco Loco, Nagisa, Uncle Ignatios Fantastic Moustache Taco Stand, Urban Oven, Cheese Mongrel, Central, Oma’s Kitchen, Red Belly Gourmet, Hunter Ice Creams and more,” Mr Cassel said.
“It will be a fun event with free entertainment and free kids activities and we hope people will bring the family along to have a great time in this brand new public space.”
