A new year is a chance to turn over a new leaf and embrace new opportunities. I look forward to what I can achieve alongside my fellow Councillors for our wonderful community.
The first Council meeting for 2017 will be held on Wednesday, February 1. Community members are very welcome to attend.
I’d also like to acknowledge those who participated in the Combined Churches Christmas Lunch. A special thanks to the organisers, volunteers and business sponsors. It is great to help the less fortunate and lonely in our community.
Now we have finished celebrating the festive season it is time to turn our focus on the celebration of our great nation.
Australia Day is just around the corner and we have a great day planned for the entire community.
Celebrations will commence with a Citizenship Ceremony and the Australia Day Awards at the East Cessnock Bowling Club from 10am.
Australia Day is a very special time to become an Australian citizen and be welcomed in to the community.
It is also an honour to recognise the outstanding work many residents do in our community. This year a special thanks is being extended to those involved in fighting the Bushfires occurring at the end of 2016.
After the official proceedings we will hold a free barbecue lunch from 12pm at East End Oval, Victoria Street. Not only will you be able to enjoy a bite to eat but you will be able to enjoy some great entertainment.
It is very exciting to announce the inaugural Mayor’s Cup Cricket Match, a free event for the community.
The Mayor’s Eleven is sure to be a highlight of our Australia Day celebrations. It will see two teams made up of local first grade players going head to head.
It starts at 12.30pm with the presentation of the trophy at 3.30pm. For more information head to http://www.cessnock.nsw.gov.au/community/events-ceremonies/australiaday.
Seniors Week for 2017 is also not too far away, details about our extensive calendar of events are set to be released shortly.
Seniors Week is on from Friday 3 March to Saturday 18 March.
