A car restoration project led by Cessnock PCYC created some great opportunities for the young men taking part, including two apprenticeships and a meeting with Supercar drivers.

Project Rebuild engages with local youth to help them become active members of the community.
The participants, aged 15 to 17, have been working on the resurrection of a 1979 Holden HZ ute with the support of a number of local businesses.
Cessnock PCYC youth case manager, Senior Constable Matthew Ellis said the project is already reaping rewards for the participants.
“Since we started the restoration, two of the five young men involved with the project have been offered industry apprenticeships, which is a fantastic outcome,” Senior Constable Ellis said.
As an added bonus, Supercars approached the Project Rebuild team and created the opportunity for the participants to go to Sydney in December, meet with some of the Supercar drivers and check out the race team pits.
“It was an amazing experience for all,” Snr Constable Ellis said.
The boys taking part have described the project as “awesome” and “life-changing”.
“It has made me more confident, and if all goes well, I’ll have a career from engaging in the program,” one said.
When the restoration is complete, the vehicle will be auctioned with all proceeds to go into future Project Rebuild activities.
The ute also will be on show at the Supercars event in Newcastle in November.
