Masters, from Newcastle, had trailed Sedgemen by three point going into the deciding night, but clawed back them back with a near faultless display dropping only one heat to establish a two-point lead by the final round of heats.
Sedgemen needed to win the final heat of the night to qualify for the B-final, but was beaten by last year’s Australian title winner Brady Kurtz who defeated Masters for last year’s title.
Watching Sedgemen’s race anxiously with his pit crew, Masters willed Kurtz home and when the New South Welshman crossed the line Masters was swamped by well-wishers.
“I’m just stoked. It’s incredible. I have worked so hard for this after the disappointment of finishing runner-up the last two years,” an elated Masters said.
The celebrations continued back into the pit area, and Masters admitted he was in no state of mind for the A-final which followed.
“My mind was all over the place. I blew the first turn and nearly lost it in the A-final. But the title is mine and that’s all that counts,” he said.
Kurtz completed a fine meeting winning the A-final from Queenslander’s Nick Morris and Troy Batchelor, with Masters bringing up the rear celebrating his title with a wheelstand down the home straight.
