Hunter Valley residents may have had a small reprieve from the sweltering heat, but the high temperatures are set to return on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The mercury is set to hit 40 degrees on Tuesday and 42 on Wednesday in both Maitland and Cessnock before dropping back to 29 with a possible shower on Thursday.
Wednesday’s scorcher is set to be accompanied by strong winds of 22km/hour, creating high-risk fire conditions.
The heat is not forecast to be as scorching on the coast however, with a forecast of 31 on Tuesday and 35 on Wednesday in Newcastle.
Friday will be another hot one in the Lower Hunter, with predictions of 36 degrees in Maitland and Cessnock.
