Kurri Kurri girl Lucy Bailey, 10, felt the local firefighters deserved that good feeling after battling the enormous bushfire that threatened her town on Wednesday.

Lucy’s mum Holly said her daughter was terrified and anxious as they witnessed the smoke clouds grow above their Florence Street home, but at the same time she was intrigued by all of the trucks, helicopters and planes that were fighting the fire.

“Later that night we drove down Heddon Street, Kurri where the RFS command post was and she was in awe of the dozens and dozens of fire trucks and other emergency services that were involved,” Mrs Bailey said.

“She asked for me to pull over as she wanted to say thank you, which shocked me as she's so shy!

“I told her we couldn't as they were way too busy, and she then said she will write them a thankyou letter and asked if I could post it for her the following day.

“She came straight home and did just that, saying while saying how amazing they are and they should be paid a million dollars each, to which I told her that a lot of them don't get paid, they just volunteer.”

When Lucy’s dad Troy got home on Thursday afternoon, her parents surprised her by taking her to Kurri Kurri Fire Station to deliver her letter personally.

Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade deputy captain Jamie Cockburn said the firefighters appreciated Lucy’s thoughful gesture.

“It was such a kind thing for her to do, so we gave her a tour of the fire station, and gave her some Lego, and let her get up in the tanker and the pump,” he said.

Mrs Bailey said Lucy was “wrapped” to receive a tour of the station and that she gave the firefighters lots of hugs.

“Considering the the 24 hours before that was hectic and tiring for these firies, they treated Lucy beautifully,” she said.

“They were so welcoming and caring towards her gesture.”

Mrs Bailey said her daughter’s act of kindness was not surprising.

“She has always been very thoughtful and caring and very interested in helping others,” she said.

“It's second nature to her and I know that her future career will be along these lines.”

Mrs Bailey posted Lucy’s letter on her Facebook page, and it has been shared by a number of national media outlets.

The letter reads:

“Dear Firefighters, thank you so much for keeping us safe today! The fire was very close to my house. I was very very scared and I was freaking out but I knew I was safe when I heard the fire trucks. Thank you for keeping all of us and our houses and pets safe! You all deserve one million dollars each. Love from Lucy Paige Bailey.”
