A HAMILTON South resident who stabbed two former associates after they had allegedly forced their way into his unit is not expected to face criminal charges.
The Fowler Street resident, 45, has told police he had answered a knock on his Housing NSW unit about 10.30pm on Saturday before two men rushed inside.
The altercation turned violent before the two alleged home invaders, male relatives aged 46 and 19, were stabbed with a knife.
The younger man received only superficial cuts to his torso and was treated at John Hunter Hospital before being released into police custody on Sunday.
He was interviewed and charged with aggravated break and enter in company and formally refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Monday.
His older relative suffered one stab wound to his torso, the injury immediately considered life-threatening before emergency surgery was able to stabilise his condition on Sunday.
He has not been spoken to by detectives and remained under police guard in John Hunter Hospital on Sunday.
Detectives hope to speak with the older man in the next few days.
The resident, who remained at the scene when emergency services were called to assist in treating the two men, was not arrested.
Fairfax Media understands detectives believe the resident had acted in self-defence and were not looking at laying charges.
The resident knew the two other men, who were also residents of Hamilton South but in another unit block of the high-density public housing estate.
The motive for the alleged home invasion was still unclear and detectives were investigating what led to the breakdown between the two relatives and their alleged victim which could have prompted the altercation.
Neighbours were also being interviewed.

One man, 45, remained in John Hunter Hospital after improving from the life-threatening single wound he suffered on Saturday night.
His alleged accomplice, 19, suffered multiple wounds but had been released into the custody of detectives on Sunday where he was set to be charged with aggravated break and enter.
It will be alleged the Hamilton South pair had attempted a home invasion in a Fowler Street unit about 10.30pm but were attacked by the resident.
Emergency services were called to treat both the men.
