The renaming would honour the late Jeff Maybury, who was the longest-serving councillor on Cessnock City Council when he passed away in July 2015.
Affectionately known as the Mayor of Weston, he was a councillor for 35 years, was an active volunteer with the St Vincent de Paul Society, president of the Weston RSL Sub-branch and committed to helping the Tidy Towns movement.
Mr Maybury was a long-time advocate for the general maintenance and improvement of Chinamans Hollow and in particular, Peace Park.
Cessnock City Council voted in August to write to the GNB to request the name change.
GNB chairperson Narelle Underwood said the board is encouraging community comment before it considers the proposal.
“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” she said.
“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
Details of the proposal can be viewed at www.gnb.nsw.gov.au.
Submissions close March 15 and can be lodged via the website, or by post to: The Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Avenue, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
