Cessnock’s innings was cut short by the storm and the game postponed with Cessnock on 9-232 when the game was abandoned.

Richards (98) and Joshua Dagg (48) set up the big total combining for an impressive 124-run third wicket partnership.

“I copped plenty while I was out there so it was nice to put together a big partnership with Daggy. I knew I was close to the 100 too,” Richards, who was caught behind shortly before the storm hit, said.

Cessnock claimed the title courtesy of finishing top of the table, going undefeated in the preliminary rounds.

Maitland’s Lincoln Mills was the pick of his side bowlers taking 4-34 from his 10 overs. Elliot Thompson chimed in with three wickets.

Skipper Brent Watson said it was disappointing to be denied the chance to win the game on the field. 

“It’s a shame that the biggest spectacle in Hunter Valley senior cricket was decided in this fashion,” he said. “We play cricket to hit the winning runs or take the final wicket, but the recent strange weather patterns denied both teams that opportunity.

“We deserve the title, however, after being the standout team in the round games. The team have sacrificed a lot of Sundays with family to contest the John Bull and McDonald’s Plate. They should be proud of their achievements.

“I was so happy for Barry Richards to be named player of the final after again dominating the Maitland attack. He top scored in both games against them and was clearly the best performer in this year’s shield season.”

Cessnock’s top year included making the semi-finals in the McDonald’s Plate. They play for the Coal Boards Cup in two weeks.

 Cessnock’s under-14 representative team finished just short in their bid for a title, losing to Maitland West in the final.

The young Cessock team was dismissed for 84 in the 32nd over and Maitland West successfully chased the target down with five wickets in hand.
