A Mayoral Minute adopted at last week’s meeting will see council make a submission to the Senate inquiry into the relocation of corporate Commonwealth entities to regional areas.
The submission will outline the economic benefits and the regional development opportunities that would result from a department relocating to the region, as well as the cost-saving benefit to the Federal Government.
Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent said decentralisation of such agencies is a real opportunity for the Cessnock LGA.
“Kurri Kurri and Cessnock are perfectly positioned for the relocation of a government department, our proximity to Newcastle and Sydney makes us a great potential site.” Cr Pynsent said.
“This is an economic opportunity for our community that would generate jobs and growth – a key priority for our community as we deal with high unemployment rates especially among young people.
“The benefits will disseminate throughout our community with more employment opportunities and discretionary spending increasing.”
The Senate inquiry will investigate the operation, effectiveness and consequences of the relocation of corporate Commonwealth entities, as well as the economic, environmental and capability implications.
Submissions close March 10 and can be made at www.aph.gov.au. The report is due to be tabled on May 9.
