It was encouraging to see the events well attended and a sea of smiles. I attended a variety of events, ranging from the Walking Basketball, the Elders Afternoon Tea, Abermain Concert, the open day at the Cessnock Men’s Shed, Kurri Kurri Women’s Shed, Seniors Choir Concert, CPAC Concert and the Old Brush Visit.
While the events all differed, one thing was noticeably the same, every person at each activity was clearly enjoying themselves.
The partnership with Calvary in a joint Seniors Expo and Vintage Car Display illustrated the value in our community working together. This is what Seniors Week is all about, getting everyone involved and connecting people in our community.
A huge thank you must be extended to the members of our dedicated Seniors Week Committee. Their commitment to community and hard work is imperative to bringing the Seniors Festival 2017 to life.
Congratulations, it was a real success and Council certainly looks forward to building on our achievements next year.
YOUTH WEEK DRAWS NEAR
We are now gearing up for Youth Week, which commences on March 31 and runs until April 9.
Once again the Youth Week organising committee has done an exceptional job in working together to coordinate over 30 activities for our young people to enjoy.
There are activities on offer to young people aged between 12-25, and we are proud to announce the 2017 program is our most accessible yet, with every single activity catering to young people with a disability.

GARDEN ORGANICS SERVICE STARTS
The garden organics service has now officially completed its first two weeks of service and the results are fantastic for our Cessnock local government area.
In the first week household collections totalled 107 tonnes, which is 25 percent of the total material collected from households in their two bins.
A long-standing record was broken with one garbage truck emptying 700 garbage bins in a load compared to 500 before the garden organics service commenced – a brilliant result showing this service is having a real impact on reducing the amount of waste going to landfill in our community.
