A shark sighting forced the closure of a popular Port Stephens beach on Tuesday morning.

Beachwatch NSW reported the closure of Fingal Beach which came off the back of a warm and popular Easter long weekend in Port Stephens.
Surfers and swimmers were urged to avoid using the beach until it is reopened. The species of the shark was unknown.
Port Stephens lifeguard supervisor Phil Rock said he was unsure how long the beach would remain closed for.
“The lifeguards there will assess the situation and make a decision through the day,” he said.
“If they can open the beach today they will.”
The sighting has come after a reported shark encounter at One Mile Beach on April 2.
Ambulance NSW said paramedics treated a 46-year-old man with minor cuts to his left foot and calf.
He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. The species of the shark was also unknown.
