A pet must microchipped by 12 weeks of age, at point of sale or when they are given away in order to comply with the law.
Cessnock City Council’s ranger team has organised the Microchipping Month of May initiative with the aim to see every dog in the Cessnock local government area microchipped.
Ranger team leader Kurt Livens encouraged residents to take advantage of the free event.
“Microchipping your pet is important because without one it is very hard for rangers to quickly locate and reunite owners with their lost pets,” Mr Livens said.
Council has held free microchipping days for many years.
This year’s event will extend across four Thursdays in May and will be held at dog parks throughout the LGA.
Mr Livens hopes the new format will gives residents more opportunity to attend as they now have a number of dates to choose from.
“We always have such a great response from the community for the free microchipping event and we have worked to make the event more flexible,” he said.
Free microchipping days will be held at Miller Park, Branxton on May 4; Varty Park, Weston on May 11; Manning Park, Cessnock on May 18 and Stanford Merthyr Park on May 25.
All sessions will run from 1pm to 4pm.
Rangers will be on hand to answer any questions. All dogs must be on a lead.
If you own a cat, contact council’s customer service team on 4993 4100 to arrange a free microchipping.
