Community organisation Towns with Heart brought the project to life after it received a grant from the NSW Government’s Social Housing Community Improvement Fund.
Towns with Heart community project manager Lesley Morris said the mural at the skate park will be an important addition to the mural project, which currently comprises 57 outdoor murals.
“This mural is particularly important to our young people, we have done extensive community consultation with the help of Youth Off the Streets and CYCOS to ensure young people had their say on the design,” Ms Morris said.
Professional artist Peter Sesselmann from Muralworks has been engaged to complete the graffiti art-inspired mural.
“We have done extensive research on how the kids use the skate park,” he said.
“We looked at the lines kids used to skate around the park. The tracks used by skaters influenced how we designed the mural.
“We wanted it to be interactive, it became a board game almost.”
Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the mural was a great initiative.
“Kurri Kurri Skate Park is a frequented council facility and it is fantastic to see this initiative benefiting our local young people,” he said.
The mural is expected to be completed over the next month, weather permitting.
To ensure the minimum disruption to skate park users, work will be undertaken in the mornings on Monday to Friday.
