The NSW Government has allocated $200,000 this financial year to install new kerbs, signs and line marking and moving stop lines forward at the accident-prone intersection.
In the five years to September 2016 there were 13 crashes within a 50-metre radius of the intersection of Cessnock Road and Kline Street, including nine injury crashes.
Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald said the improvements will make it safer for motorists turning out of Kline Street by improving sight lines.
Pedestrian safety will also be improved with the new kerb alignment on Cessnock Road, which will reduce the crossing distance at the refuge, while painted cycle lanes will be provided on Cessnock Road through the intersection to make the area safer for cyclists.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 4pm from Sunday to Friday and is expected to be complete in two-and-a-half weeks, weather permitting.
Changed traffic conditions will be in place including lane closures, reduced speed limits and traffic control.
Cessnock City Council will complete the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime.
