It’s time to sort out your underwear drawer – Cessnock and Hunter River Olaves are collecting bras for the Uplift Project again.
The project sends bras to women in disadvantaged countries, where bras are seen as a luxury item.
It has sent more than one million bras to women in need since 2005.
Last year the Cessnock and Hunter River Olaves (a Girl Guide unit for women aged 18 to 30) collected more than 700 bras for the project, which were shipped off to Fiji in October.
Hunter River Division Olave program liaison Lauren Gray said bras of all shapes and sizes – including nursing bras and crop tops – are needed.
She said reusable nursing pads are also appreciated, as are mastectomy bras and prostheses (which will be given to hospitals for distribution).
Swimwear is also helpful – particularly for women who fish or dive for cash crops.
New underpants and fabric nappies (second-hand or new) are also accepted.
“In some places a girl without underpants does not go to school during her period,” Ms Gray said.
“And in some areas, fabric nappies are expensive to buy so mums often buy one disposable at a time. That money is better spent on food for Mum.”
Ms Gray said the Uplift Project desperately needs money to be able to send the bras overseas.
“It costs approximately $10 to ship 100 bras – that’s 10 cents per bra,” she said.
Cash donations can be sent to Cessnock Guides, PO Box 814, Cessnock, 2325, or hand-delivered to Kylie at Betta Home Living Kurri Kurri; Lauren at Badgeman, or the Cessnock Guide Hall in Henderson Avenue on Tuesdays from 5pm to 7pm (except school holidays).
Bras can also be dropped off to the Guide Hall at those times, and at Cessnock Library, Clayton Barr’s office, LJ Hooker Cessnock, Betta Home Living Kurri Kurri and 2327 Charity Boot Camp in Kurri Kurri.
