NAIDOC Week is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and provides a great opportunity to recognise, enjoy and learn about these cultures in our local community.
The theme for this years’ NAIDOC is ‘Our Languages Matter’.
The language traditionally spoken in most of the Cessnock LGA was the Wonnarua language and there are groups across our region who are working to revitalise this.
The theme for this years’ NAIDOC Week, which runs from July 2 to 9, is ‘Our Languages Matter’.
While celebrations are officially held from July 2 to 9, the program in Cessnock kicked off a little earlier this year with a special performance of Coranderrk at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on June 22.
Coranderrk recreates the Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881 where the men and women of Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head to head with the Aboriginal Protection Board.
It is an important story in Indigenous history, one of determination and strength.
Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent encourages our local community to check out the program and join the NAIDOC Week festivities.
“It is fantastic to see such a wide range of activities that provide so many different opportunities for the community to get involved in,” Cr Pynsent said.
“There are many highlights in our local program including workshops, family fun days, the annual Cessnock street parade, the Koori Cook-off and two exhibitions opening at the Cessnock Gallery.”
