A 28-year-old was charged in relation to the incident.
A man and a woman were inside a Lee-Ann Crescent home 4am Saturday when two men allegedly broke in and forced them from their bedroom into the lounge room.
A one-year-old child was also in the house at the time.
When the woman left the room to tend to the child, the man was struck with a hammer several times.
Police said he suffered serious head wounds as well as lacerations and contusions to his arms, legs and hand.
The alleged offenders then fled the premises before the couple called triple-0.
The male victim was taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Following the incident, an arrest warrant was obtained for premises in Mitchell Avenue, Kurri Kurri.
Officers arrested a 28-year-old man in the front yard of the home at 2.45pm Saturday.
During the search warrant police seized several items that they believe were used in the home invasion.
A second male was also arrested at the home, but was later released.
Police inquiries are continuing in relation to the second offender.
The 28-year-old was charged with special aggravated break, enter and commit serious indictable offence (wounding).
