This week’s Story Time had a bit of extra excitement, with a visit from Fire and Rescue NSW Kurri Kurri firefighters.
Children enjoyed a firefighter-themed story and craft activities, and had the chance to explore a fire engine.
Kurri Kurri Fire Brigade deputy captain Wayne Redfern said it’s important for the kids to get exposure to local emergency services.
“We’re able to get the message out that we are here to help anyone who needs it,” he said.
“We’re able to influence both the young minds of the community and their parents.
“Sometimes the smile on these kids’ faces is the only encouragement we need to visit.”
Children's services library officer, Sandy Ryan thinks that it’s a great way to get the community involved in such an important issue as fire safety.
“The firefighters have visited pre-schools in the past and it was so successful,” she said.
“The kids are now able to understand the fire safety lesson plans like 'Get Down Low and Go! Go! Go!'
The kids and their parents are able to learn about fire safety and it also brings together the community. It’s very exciting for everyone involved."
Cessnock Library holds Rhyme Time (for children aged zero to two years old) every Monday at 10am, and Story Time (for two-to-six-year-olds) on Tuesdays at 10am, while Kurri Kurri Library holds a combined session on Wednesdays at 10am.
