The town will be celebrating with the annual Kurri Kurri Community Festival at Rotary Park on October 21.
The festival was established in 2011 in the lead-up to the opening of the Hunter Expressway.
Its purpose was similar to that of the Kurri Kurri Civic Week celebrations of the 1970s, which was to gather the community together for fun and excitement for the whole family.
The festival will feature rides and face painting for the kids, food stalls and a movie (to be announced) will be shown at dark.
Country music boy band Brothers3 will also be supplying the live entertainment from 5pm.
The brothers appeared on The X Factor Australia in 2014, coming in third place.
Festival coordinator Carol Doherty is excited to bring together the community for a great day in Kurri Kurri.
“It’s an excellent day for schools, dance groups and just the community in general to come together,” she said.
“It’s a family atmosphere and everyone is welcome.”
Ms Doherty thanked the committee, sponsors and Cessnock City Council for their assistance in getting the event up and running.
The festival will run from 11am to 9pm and entry is free. Bring your own chair or picnic blanket for the movie screening.
The birthday celebrations don’t end there for Kurri Kurri.
The district business chamber and the festival committee will host a dinner dance at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club on Friday, October 27, which will raise money for next year’s community festival.
The event will consist of champagne and canapes on arrival, a three-course dinner and live entertainment by The Sun Rockets.
The dress code for the dinner dance is ‘after-five’. Tickets are $70 and can be bought by calling Maria on 4937 1417 or emailing orbch91065@bigpond.net.au, or calling into the Kurri Kurri Visitors Centre at 199 Lang Street. September 30 is the cut-off date for tickets.
For more information about either event, call Carol on 4938 0510 or 0427 380 510 or find ‘Kurri Kurri Community Festival’ on Facebook.
