Tyrrell’s won the coveted gong for NSW’s top wine at the annual Sydney Royal Wine Show Awards last week.
The trophy – the James Busby Perpetual Trophy for NSW’s best wine – is awarded to the wine that totals most points on the NSW wine show circuit for the previous 12 months.
This year’s winning wine was their flagship 2012 vintage Vat 47 Chardonnay.
Their previous winners were the 2005 and 2006 Vat 1 Semillon.
“We’re thrilled,” Chris Tyrrell said yesterday. “Our semillons invariably do well, but these chardonnay awards mean a lot, not just to us but to the Hunter in general. Our region is renowned internationally for our semillons, but our top chardonnays are a match for anybody too.
“The 2012 vintage really good for whites, but not so for reds,” he said.
And the wine itself?
“A beauty. Still young and lively, but picking up some complexity with age. It has been a big hit with buyers, so we don’t have much of it left.”
