About once a month for the past year, residents of RFBI Cessnock Masonic Village’s Westhaven Hostel have been treated to a visit by small groups of children from Cessnock Multipurpose Children's Centre participating in their ‘intergenerational program’.

The children (aged three to five) and residents take part in art and craft activities, reading, puzzles, singing and conversation.

Preschool educator Leonie Tinkler said the visits have transpired into “a beautiful connection for young and old”.

“The children go away with confidence in themselves, being in a different environment,” Ms Tinkler said.

“They remember the residents’ names and some of them talk about it for weeks afterwards.”

RFBI Cessnock Masonic Village general manager Sharryn McDonald said the village is delighted to welcome the preschool children.

“Our residents are always happy to see the children; they certainly brighten their day on each visit,” she said.
