The comedy duo start shooting the second season of True Story with Hamish and Andy in a fortnight, and say people have been flocking to their show because they're sick of how fake reality television has become.

This theory would help explain why other shows involving ordinary Australians - such as Karl Stefanovic's This Time Next Year - have been smash hits, while programs like Seven's Yummy Mummies have tanked in the ratings.

"Reality TV is becoming far less real," Lee said. "Shows are cast based on the talent of that particular star to become the next big reality contestant."

Blake agrees, pointing out that reality TV is full of "alpha personalities" trying to make the big time.

"I don't think anybody sitting opposite us on the show is looking to leverage their appearance on True Story into a line of products or a fitness regime," he said. "The people didn't set out to be on TV - a lot of the time they're dobbed in. But they're happy to be there for their half hour, then they go."

True Story sees ordinary people from all over Australia recount strange and embarrassing tales to Hamish and Andy. The concept may seem simple enough, but producers have the difficult task of chopping up the interviews and weaving into them fictionalised re-enactments involving some of Australia's leading actors.

Which is why overseas networks have shown a keen interest in buying the rights to the show. The phones at the duo's South Melbourne office have been ringing off the hook with calls from producers as far away as Sweden and the Netherlands.

"At the moment, our focus is Australia," Lee said. "But it's certainly something we'll look at when we come up with some breathing space. It's nice to know that the interest is there."

The pair also hosed down speculation they have another "big, secret" TV show in the works given they're taking a step back from radio at the end of the year.

"We'll have some spare months in the next year, but don't hold your breath for a surprise reveal," Blake said. "This year we had two full-time jobs, so next year we want to go back to just having the one. If I spend months just being a dad and Andy spends months playing golf, I'm sure we'd be wrapped."

But that doesn't mean they don't throw around ideas for TV shows all the time. It's just that "99 per cent" of them aren't viable.

"Since we were 21, we've had an idea that is basically Stephen King's Running Man," Blake joked. "We'd probably just have more laughs in our version."
