The Cessnock Goannas delivered on the big stage to run our 16-6 grand final winners against Lakes United
The 10-point victory at McDonald Jones Stadium delivered the 2017 premiership to the team to add to their 2017 minor premiership.
Cessnock five-eighth Connor Kirkwood was named player of the match.
The Goannas led 12-6 at half-time after first half tries to Kirkwood and halves partner Jack Threadgate.
Defence was on top in a tense second half until Cessnock Centre Patrick Jurd cemented the Goannas’ win crossing for an uncoverted try in the 50th minute of the game.
The scores remained unchanged for the final 10 minutes for the young Goannas to claim the title.
In other results on Saturday, Macquarie Scorpions defeated title favourites Western Suburbs 24-6 to end a 26-year premiership drought.
Wests were reserve grade premiers with a 31-12 win over South Newcastle.
Souths defeated Central Newcastle 7-6 in a thrilling Ladies League Tag grand final.
