The Novocastrian has extended his series lead to 22 after third place in Saturday’s Stockholm Grand Prix and a huge 18-point haul.
“It’s not all about winning the final; I am very happy with the points I scored tonight. Who would have dreamt that I could get 18 points in a GP and extend my lead?,” an elated Doyle told Speedwaygp.com with just the Polish and Australian grands prix left to complete the series.
“To score that many points, I am over the moon. Hats off to the boys; they rode very well in the final. I am happy with my third place.”
Doyle finished behind Slovenian rider Matej Zagar, who won his second straight grand prix, and Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik, with Denmark’s Peter Kildemand fourth.
More importantly for the title race he outscored his two nearest rivals Polish pair Patrick Dudek and Maciej Janowski by 12 and 11 points respectively.
Claiming the world title victory in Torun will have special significance for Doyle as it was at the Polish stadium that his 2016 world title quest ended after crashing heavily in the series’ penultimate event.
Doyle, unable to travel because of a collapsed lung, was forced to watch from Europe as American Greg Hancock clinched victory in the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The Australian Grand Prix is at Ethiad Stadium on October 28.
