Thompson took out the first on the program on the Adam Duncan-trained six-year-old gelding Irish Duke, who was having start number 27, for its second victory.
A lucky pick up ride in the second race on Latin Light took his wins to 4300, while the third leg of his treble came up when Island Grange trained by Les Tilly saluted in easy fashion.
Cessnock trainer Bran Walker was also in the winners’ circle when Stylish Charlene, a four-year-old mare by Myboychalie, broke its maiden status at the juicy odds of 33-1.
The race club is now firmly focused on Friday, October 13 when the time-honoured Jungle Juice Cup will be run.
The change from its traditional July date is expected to result in a bumper crowd.
This year’s Cessnock Cup will also be held on a Friday with the meeting on November 24.
